Nothing to be Done
RAWBangkok is co-authored by Penfold and Werewolf
Contact: rawbangkok@gmail.com
RAWBangkok was never intended to be a re-run of Werewolf’s Lair. In fact, it was designed to be a collaborative effort between me and Penfold which, due to his specific personality traits and literary gifts, would carry us in a very different direction than my old site.
Werewolf’s Lair ended because I felt that fifteen months of describing the tedium of my daily life for a waiting world was enough. The format was stale… there was nothing left to say in the tiny world of my existence that was new — or, if not nothing, then damn little.
I was keen to work on a site that was something new and exciting. Something that would be fun and challenging because it would be different.
But I was cognizant of my limitations, both as a writer and as a human being. I write in a way that is very recognizable, I think. My structure, grammar and choice of words is… well… predictable.
I felt that what I needed to do was to collaborate on a blog with someone so different in style and personality that the blog would grow and take shape in unusual and unexpected directions. It’s no surprise, then, that I ended up partnered with Penfold. If there are two words that describe him, they are “unusual” and “unexpected”.
The freshness of sharing ideas for RAW has been exciting.
For example, after he read my initial blog for this site about g-clubs he suggested that, upon his return to Bangkok in the new year, we should organize regular nights out together for the purposes of writing separate reviews that would be posted in a single blog offering. Categorized as “night & day” reviews, the meaning would be twofold — first of all, going out at night and reviewing the next day — but more importantly giving the separate (and probably wildly different) views of the exact same event. Imagine Penfold’s wild descriptions of a night out on the town next to my own restrained notes… night and day indeed.
He also offered up the idea of a regular Q&A section, in which readers would be invited to submit questions to either or both of us. True to the theme of the blog, we would commit to answering every question and being totally honest in the face of reader’s questions, which we believe would get increasingly challenging over time.
And he has had other ideas as well… every one of them has had me slapping my head in amazement at how un-creative I always was in my approach to Werewolf’s Lair.
But a short peruse through the site that is RAWBangkok will show that — except for a different color scheme — it is simply Werewolf’s Lair material re-packaged, which is, I assure you, NOT what it is supposed to be.
My presence is supposed to exist as a counterpoint to Penfold — and he to mine. Everything about us is so different that the schitzophrenic experience of reading RAWBangkok should be mind-numbing for the fact that two such different characters and styles are side by side and in such stark contrast.
But, to date, it hasn’t happened.
“But Werewolf”, I can hear everyone saying, “you should have known. Penfold, in his youth and irresponsibility could never be reliable.”
And yet you’d be wrong.
Getting Penfold to write has never been a problem. Scan the comments of the BBB archives or TFS2M and you will find that Penfold loves to write!
What has happened is the opposite of irresponsibility.
See, contrary to public perceptions, Penfold is an amazingly disciplined young man. He has the physique of a guy who is at the gym regularly because… well… he’s at the gym regularly. And no one gets hair like his without dedication to the cause.
His life in Bangkok is often one long uninterrupted holiday, and in the past he’s done it based on a huge supply of cash that kept him balls deep in pussy (or whatever) daily. Hell, even in my mid-40s when I came here on a three-month holiday backed by 100K or so of Australian dollars in my checking account I fucked and drank and drank and fucked till my wiener was shriveled and about to fall off. Being the youthful lad he is, Penfold’s romps through the Garden of Eden that is Bangkok have put my own holiday adventures to shame.
I can speak authoritatively because, in spite of the differences in our age, personality, appearance and style Penfold and I were regular drinking companions in early 2008.
I think we would both agree that I am a little crazier than I seem at first and he — well he is a bit more responsible that one would imagine from his wild ramblings on the internet.
Which brings us to the current situation.
Penfold is at a point in his life where he needed to take some specific actions. I’ll leave it to him to explain himself in future blogs, but I’ll tip you off to one or two facts of his current life.
He is in England at the moment — that’s no secret. He went there while I was away in Northern Thailand back in June, and he won’t be returning until the 10th of January 2009.
With RAW, I think Pennie always had in mind to spend the balance of 2008 writing the occasional blog to fill it with content and launching it upon his triumphant return. I, on the other hand, imagined that RAW could be an open blog right away, and that it could develop it’s own life as we filled it with content.
What I didn’t understand was Penfold’s current need to be responsible.
See, he isn’t just in England; he’s actually got a responsible job. And, being back in the ‘real’ world, it’s a job that has demands. Penfold is toiling away ten-hours per day as he fills up his bank account and prepares for his triumphant return to the Land of Smiles in the new year.
He simply hasn’t got time to write a blog.
I know this isn’t simple rationalizing for a couple of reasons. First of all, I know Penfold, and if he simply wasn’t writing blogs because he was a pussy, he’d man up and tell me. We know each other well and — neck throttling aside — there’s no reason for him to be less than honest with me.
But more significantly, I read the same internet sites that he does… maybe not all of them, but some of them. As a commenter, Penfold generally leaves his muddy footprints all over the place, often engaging in banter with other commenters and never failing to rise to someone who has baited him.
Recently he has been absent from those spaces. In private email to me, he has apologized and explained that work obligations occupy him at the moment. More troubling, perhaps, is the fact that he says that they show no signs of letting up in the foreseeable future.
This puts me in the odd position of waiting for Penfold to stop being responsible. I fear that, , I may find myself waiting — if not forever — then at least for a very long time.
It might seem like I am blaming Penfold. Not at all.
In a strange reversal of roles it was Penfold who urged me to move slowly with RAW, and I who was impatient. I was driven in large measure by the desire to complete Werewolf’s Lair and move to something new.
In my impatience I now find myself with half a blog. A partnership, for the moment, without a partner.
RAW is all about the contrast between myself and Penfold. Without him, RAW is nothing. It is a washed out version of Werewolf’s Lair.
So I have to apologize.
RAWBangkok is a great idea, and it will happen. But the driver of the site in terms of creativity and excitement is Penfold. While he is tied down with responsibility the site will probably be little more than a place for me to practice my writing.
It looks like it could be as long as four months before Penfold is in a position to make RAW the exciting and unpredictable site that we envision it to be.
Till then, I’ll occupy this space with some boring and predictable crap a few times a week. Check in now and then if you like, but the real fun probably won’t begin until January.
My favorite scene from the play, Waiting for Godot:
Estragon dozes off, but Vladimir is not interested in hearing about his dream after rousing him. Estragon wants to hear an old joke about a brothel, which Vladimir starts but cannot finish, as he is suddenly compelled to rush off and urinate. He does not finish the story when he returns, asking Estragon instead what else they might do to pass the time. Estragon suggests that they hang themselves, the idea being that this may give them erections, but they quickly abandon the idea when it seems that they might not both die: this would leave one of them alone, an intolerable notion. They decide to do nothing: “It’s safer”

WW & P now there is a combination to savour! Looking forward to the “night and day” review of your favoured Country Roads, Cascade etc.

I think it will makes more sense if Penfold posted his entries one at a time, as he writes them, instead of a whole library at once.
RAWBangkok looks promising. Best of luck.

Manny,
I guess the point is that Penfold is currently too busy to write two or three posts per week, so he is inclined to write one every few weeks as he finds the time, so that when he is ready to devote sufficient time to the blog to keep up with the pace, he has several written, queued up and ready to go.
Whether you realize it or not, most blogs operate this way, with people writing when they have time, then scheduling blogs for release at pre-determined times. So, if Pennie were to write, say, ten blogs over the next four months, they would probably be released over a period of three weeks or so, and he would continue writing while they were being released, thus, always being ahead.
When BBB covered my site while I was away in June & July for example, he had about 8 blogs written and ready to go from the first day, with two a week released. In fact, his last blog, Maid Service Required, was the first one written. He loaded them on my site BEFORE I went away, and edited them prior to release.
If something topical (time sensitive) comes up, you write the blog, post it and if necessary just push back the dates on your scheduled releases.
Personally, with WWLair I always had three or four blogs queued up and ready to release… in fact I screwed up this week by queuing up an announcement for RAW then forgetting about it. It posted on schedule even though RAW isn’t really ready.
But WWLair was unusual in that most days I wrote one or two fresh blogs. That’s not really my aim with this site, though I may simply make it a WWLair extension until Penfold is freed up enough to contribute regularly.
Penfold never committed to writing in September… he was always talking about it as a future blog. I was simply impatient and tried to push the project along before it was ready.
I guess the short version is that Penfold is unlikely to be posting here on a regular basis any time soon. It’s my fault it happened, but if I’d realized the situation before, I probably would have just kept writing WWLair until RAW was ready to go.
Like I said, I am a victim of my own impatience.
But when PF is back in town come January… hold on for some interesting stuff.

riodon: I think it will be interesting to see how it develops. I don’t think Penfold will be reviewing Country Roads, but he may be getting me out to some more interesting venues.
Like I said, the Sky Club/Resort review was the one that really kicked off the idea.
Penfold and I went to Pent Club together last year on a night when I had a minor verbal disagreement with another Pent customer. Penfold showed up with a beer bottle ready to cover my back. Listening to him and I tell the story later over beers was an amazing contrast in how two people could describe the identical event.
I think the night and day blogs will be interesting.
BTW, I’ve been trying to find a suitable “logo” for the night & day concept. Have a look at the “Archive: Night & Day Reports” tab at the top of the blog. I’ve loaded two photos in there to show Penfold. Do you think either of them has merit as the “logo” pic for night & day reports?
I’m leaning towards the ying&yang symbol, and even thinking of suggesting to Penfold that we incorporate it into the RAWBangkok logo (in red & black). The logo is Pennie’s domain, but I’m working on ideas. I’m happy to hear suggestions and feedback.
Thanks for visiting.

WW: Thanks for the interesting and informative insight into the mechanics of blog writing.
Actually I got on to RAWBangkok after reading about it on The Diary Of Phoenix. As far as I know he was the first to announce it (and the reinstatement of the WW Lair archives) and I felt it was a major scoop on his hand that was wasted.
As of a logo for the night and day concept may I suggest a picture of Laurel and Hardy. Thin, British born Stan Laurel and heavy, Americam born Oliver Hardy were very different in style and character but worked brilliantly as a team.

my girl knows this sweethart, last time I was in town me and Nan were hanging out at a side walk bar between Sukhumvit Soi 5&7 (right next to where Nigel eats and drinks nightly after closing up the Mango),. I found this to be absolutely hilarious watching all the girls and ladyboys trolling the 3am+ dregs of drunkin farang customers strolling about empty handed! Anyway at this time of morning I’m usually so piss drunk Nan has long since taken over my wallet and I just sit there like an obnoxious pig googing on all the ass that passes. One night this hot laddy glides by and Nan noticed my extra long survey of him, she teased me a bit at first but when she finally told me of his little secret I fell off my plastic patio chair and greeted Soi Sukhumvit rather intimately. From that day forward I was in love!!!!! Unfortunately He was of to pull in some BIG cash in Singapore and I never saw him again. So if he’s back in town this October I’ll get the contact info, with Pics to back my claim! If ever I were to dabble in that pond this surely would be my bitch? He’s post surgery…so that doesn’t count as gay? Right? I’m so confused all this bending gender and such, I hope she he never get braces!

Damm… I have only just found you again and new you are shutting down….
Actually i found reading about your tedium life (as you put it) rather interesting. I have no idea why, it just got addictive. Maybe its cos i used to be active on the bar scene but not anymore. Well hope you can find the time to write something between now and Jan.
// Friday, 19 September 2008 at 8:38 pm |
MSB: I’m not gonna shut down. I will run this site as a WWLair clone until Penfold is ready to go. The original idea I had was to segue from WWL to RAW but it didn’t quite work out that way.
I probably won’t write the ‘diary entries’ of WWL, but it will have the same overall flavor until Penfold comes to upgrade the level of creativity.
Cheers,
WW

Werewolf, I’m work for the government in the US and I put in for a promotion to Bangkok last summer ‘07 (still waiting to find out whether I get it), I jumped on the net and started reading up about the place for the past year. I don’t write comments because I don’t have much to say. But I had BBB in my fav’s & his was the first blog I came across, and the TFS2M is one I check most days.
But I found your blog to probably be the best and I thought it sucked when you closed it down. I think you should give yourself some more credit. Along with Ghost, I think you present a rational view of things and one of the best blogs out there.
You shouldn’t come down so hard on your writing and whether or not people like it. Because they do.
// Monday, 22 September 2008 at 1:25 am |
dogofwar: Thanks for your very positive feedback!
hmmm… I wrote 604 blogs on Werewolf’s Lair, about three dozen on Bangkok Diaries, 24 at TFS2M and so far I’m at about a dozen here. No one writes that much and puts it out for public consumption if he has no confidence in what he writes. I may be a bit self-deprecating, but I don’t suffer any inferiority complexes.
I felt that WWLair (or maybe just myself personally) was getting stale after 15 months, and I’m looking forward to writing in combination with Penfold here on RAW. Every time we trade emails he fires me up with another new idea about how we can make the blog interesting and exciting.
I like blogging; so much so that I may never be able to stop entirely. I may someday find myself on my deathbed asking the doctor to figure out how to keep me alive another two hours so that I can squeeze out one more blog about the experience.
From time to time, though, I think things need to be refreshed. I honestly had grown dissatisfied with the WWLair format… I was reaching for new things to say and finding that they just weren’t there. Talking to Penfold about this site cured that in a hurry. He’s bursting with creative ideas.
I believe that once Penfold is here on RAW with me, that I’ll be inspired by new ideas and creative approaches. I hope so anyway. I don’t think its unfair to say that I have a ’style’ that is recognizable, and therefore predictable. That can be a compliment as well as otherwise; but I think that predictability will be challenged by writing in partnership with Penfold.
In the meantime, I think that –stylistically — you’ll find much of what you used to find on Werewolf’s Lair being presented here.
I have two nights out planned on Monday and Tuesday this week. Monday is supposed to be a return to the go go bars of Sutisan Road, and Tuesday my first trip to Pegasus Member club to see “model’s night”. Hopefully those two nights will offer enough material to keep the blog mildly interesting for another week or so.
I also have a blog (already written) that will appear first on TFS2M and later here at RAW about HIV testing in the Land of Smiles. Hopefully that will prove to be useful as well.
Cheers,
WW

Well, thank god for that. I’ve only just discovered this place after visiting Werewolf’s Lair amid a fit of nostalgia (and boredom). This is an interesting concept…a brave departure, and I’m looking forward to it. Besides the edition of Penfold, there’s already one major difference between this blog and Werewolf’s Lair……it won’t get past my firewall! (I’m currently on a work contract, and the stuck-up nobs here have blocked naughty content). Your old site loads just fine….perhaps the addition of young Penfold was a step too far. So this means I’m reduced to evenings-only viewing from my laptop. Welcome back, WW. G’day manny

Swampthing: You may not believe it, but a few days ago I was wondering if you’d found the new site. I even considered going back to the old site and looking up your email address to let you know where I was and what had happened.
We’re three months away from making RAW what it will be… in the meantime just think of it as Werewolf’s Lair Lite.

Why Pee: Part of Penfold’s charm is that he doesn’t normally slow down for niceties like spell-checking, capitalization or grammar corrections. If things like this bother you then you might as well not waste time reading what he writes. His power is in his ideas and phrasing. Part of the enjoyment is the fact that he doesn’t give a fuck about spell checking. If I were you, I wouldn’t waste time on offering corrections, which make for boring reading anyway.

Strewth, there’s plenty to get through! Looks like you’ve been doing this a while. I am ashamed that I appear to be the very last of WW’s regulars to find out. Some nice pics – I’ll read the commentary when I have time.
On young penfold’s writing, a quote from the brilliant Spike Milligan comes to mind: “This book has many good things — like pages, numbers at the top, and lots and lots of words apparently chosen at random.”

I have a question that is way off topic. I would normally ask this question in the comments section in the relevant blog, except my question relates to a post you wrote ages ago and it would not be noticed if I posted it there. OK, after all that, here is my question:
Am I the only one confused as to how a girl FOLDED HER BEAUTIFUL LONG LEGS UNDER YOUR CHIN?
You wrote this about a freelancer who serviced you following the loss of your phone. Unless I’m missing the bleeding obvious, I simply don’t get it?? Perhaps you can provide a pic? Like rubic’s cube, it will weigh on my mind until I have the answer.
// Wednesday, 8 October 2008 at 2:39 pm |
I thought about that for a few minutes when I wrote the description and I don’t know how else to describe it. I was surprised that no one asked at the time.
She is a tall girl… I’d say about 5′9″ or 10″. Her legs are disproportionately long, which gives her a very appealing figure if you like them tall and slender.
Here’s my attempt to describe ‘the position’ in more detail.
She was on her back — the beginnings of a standard missionary position.
Imagine now a fairly normal position, her legs resting on my shoulders, meaning that her legs are pushed back towards her body and it usually has the effect of pulling her bum off the bed a bit — I find that this usually results in a great angle for deep penetration, by the way.
With most ‘average’ sized Thai girls, they would find their ankles on my shoulders. For her, it was more like her calf… nearly her knees. It didn’t quite have the effect of pulling her bum off the bed.
She bent her legs at the knee, crossing her ankles as it were, so that her crossed calves were pressed against my chest, and her feet were now on either side of my head, close to my ears and her knees akimbo.
IN this position, even with her dimensions, her bum rose up off the bed and we achieved that wonderful position that results in deepest penetration at the easiest angle.
I hope this clarifies.
My apologies to all those who just didn’t want to know that much detail.
Warning to children: Don’t try this at home. The girl and I are both trained professionals and this took place in a closed-set environment with all necessary safety precautions in place.
BTW, while I don’t normally get photos of my sexual positions, I did get a video of a session of 69 session the other day. You wouldn’t want to see it though… I have the dimensions of a beached whale being serviced by a charming and accommodating mermaid. Scary stuff.

Writing for a blog can be a grueling existence, I have 5 different blogs that keep me way busy. It would be way tough to write AND work a full time job. Anyway, great site/blog
