I’ve been to Sutisan Road before.  Several times in fact.

But my last trip there was in May, about four months ago.  I met a new friend recently — a guy from the US who’s been in and out of Bangkokfor many years.  He’d never been to a Sutisan gogo, so we agreed to go together on Monday night.

If you want detailed descriptions of the gogo bar offerings at Sutisan Road then click on the links in the first two sentences of this blog.  But generally, my previous impressions were upheld on trip.

A few overview comments:

These go go bars are designed for Thai customers and the places reflect it.  The physical decor is generally shoddy — comparing to the lower half of the go go bars I’ve been in at Nana, Cowboy and Patpong.

The girls are mostly free of tattoos, stretch marks, really dark skin and body piercing.  On the whole, the average dancer age seems to be younger  than their cousins taking care of farang in Nana, Cowboy and Patpong… the girls are in the upper half.

The service from the staff is generally attentive and helpful, with nothing in the way of the irritation and ripoffs often faced in the farang go gos.

It’s not essential to speak Thai in these places  — the staff has plenty of English speakers and there are always some girls who speak English — but it can help your cause if you do.  Especially if you see a girl who doesn’t speak English at all, and that includes quite a few of them.

On Monday night, then, I hit Sutisan with my buddy.  We met at “For Love” where I have generally felt the most comfortable and had the best luck in the past.  We had one leisurely beer then decided to see the rest of the street.

Having been there before, I told my friend the other good bar was at the end of the row, and that we would have to pass several smaller, less popular venues to get there.  We were assaulted by touts and girls at ever one, and walked into four of them to take a look.  With nothing on offer that we felt was un-missable we kept moving till we reached “Music VDO” go go bar at the end of the row.

This is probably the largest of the go gos, with an uncomfortable seating arrangement of only booths, and lots of pillars with poor sightlines.  It’s also a bit on the dirty side.

But there are lots of girls.  There were probably 40+ girls working on Monday night.

We wandered in between 10 and 10:30 and the place was sparsely populated with customers, so we had our pick of girls.  Nothing was inspiring either of us, but my buddy was satisfied to sit, sip our beer and keep an eye out.

Finally he popped up to attention and said, “Hey, look at that girl!”

She wasn’t really to my tastes, and I  said so, though I imagine she would have speeded up the heart rate of most punters.

Fast forward to 11:00 p.m.  The place is filling up with customers (it reached about half-full on Monday night) and the ’shows’ began.  Basically three girls dancing naked on stage.

My buddy zeroes in on the naked girl on the right.  Again, not to my taste, but she had the most perfect set of tits you could ask for.  He immediately called the mamasan over and pointed her out.  He was told that she would dance naked at the table for 100 baht, or he could take her home for 1,500 baht.

He decided to start with the table dance so he could chat to her and decide on take-away after that.

She appeared at the table 15 minutes later, and it was clear that he was awestruck by her body and her beauty.  Again, I think 80% of punters would have had the same reaction, but while I thought she was nice looking, I didn’t have the same animal lust for her that my buddy seemed to.

It turned out that she doesn’t speak any English at all, so my friend, who speaks Thai about as well as I do, got through a short conversation in Thai and invited her to go home with him.  The mamasan was called in to make sure there were no misunderstandings.

My friend was aiming for long time; mamasan said short time.  They finally agreed that she would stay about 3 hours.  The 1,500 baht price was paid.  This is one fee that pays the bar and the girl — it isn’t necessary to tip her further.

Because she was a show girl, my buddy agreed to wait until she’d finished her midnight show.

When she changed into her dress, we realized what we hadn’t known when she was naked.  It was the same girl he’d zeroed in on while she was walking around.

He was stoked.

We did see her in a couple of nervous conversations with the mamasan and another woman.  From the body language and the nervous glances we both concluded that she’d never been with a farang before, and was nervous about it.  There was a lot of good natured giggling in the conversation.

I got an SMS on Tuesday afternoon saying that she’d been good fun, and a phone call later saying that he was going back to barfine her again that night.  Apparently she was everything he dreamed she would be.

It’s hard to generalize the experience here.  I pulled two girls from For Love back in May.  One went long time and the other short time.

The photo at the top of this blog entry is a girl that my friend pulled back in May.  She spoke not a word of English, but went to his house and stayed so long that he later sent me an email saying that he thought she was never gonna leave… I think she finally left around 4 or 5 pm the next day.  He was very happy with the service she provided him.  The friend who barfined her speaks very very limited Thai, so its not necessary in terms of having fun with the girl back at your place.

All in all the go gos of Sutisan Road offer a low priced option (both drink prices and girl prices) versus the areas of Nana, Cowboy and Patpong.  In the end, a go go is a go go, and except for the 1,500 baht fixed price contract, doesn’t really require a user’s manual.

I had several other people say that you can’t really go here if you don’t speak Thai, and that you shouldn’t go alone.

I don’t think Thai is necessary from a service standpoint.  And as my month-of-May friend proved, you can have sex with ‘em happily even if you can’t talk to them.  I have spent time alone in this area on three separate occasions, and never felt exposed for not having someone to ‘watch my back’.  One of these times I got fairly drunk and the girl in the bar I was talking to made it a point to get me out to a cab and on my way, apparently concerned that I risked not achieving the goal if left to my own devices.

For a change of pace, and a good night out on a budget, I reckon Sutisan Road fits the bill!
