When Getting Laid is the only thing that matters

Monday, 6 October 2008 · 10 Comments

As a blogger, there’s something that started bothering me sometime in the past year, and now it’s positively starting to drive me crazy, like an itch in the middle of my back that I can’t reach and can’t make go away.

Part of writing a Bangkok blog is to write about the nightlife. Some would say that’s the only reason for writing a Bangkok blog, though I would disagree with them intensely. For me, it is about trying to make the experience of life in Bangkok come alive for others; to offer a glimpse into what it means to live here. I see politics, work, personal relationships, transportation, language and many other topics to be relevant topics for me as a blogger. But that’s a different discussion.

For today, I want to talk — not about Bangkok nightlife directly — but about the act of writing about Bangkok nightlife.

I have always written about the three well-known pay-4-play areas: Nana, Cowboy and Patpong. Barring unforseen circumstances I expect I will talk about them for as long as I write a Bangkok blog.

But I have never limited myself to these centers of sin. My writing has reflected my interests, and my interests are varied.

Well, strictly speaking she wasn’t the very first Thai girl I knew — she was the second.  The first Thai girl I ever knew introduced me to her.

Here’s how it went.

Me no like Thai man – he butterfly too mut – like farang jai dee

Saturday, 27 September 2008 · 15 Comments

It’s a common theme when you talk to Thai bar girls.

“No like Thai man… him butterfly too mut.  Me like farang; jai dee mak mak.”

When you first arrive in Thailand — okay, when I first arrived in Thailand — I believed it.  It sounded so sincere coming from that innocent mouth with those full, innocent lips and those shiny innocent eyes.

I also believed a lot of other things.  I believed that they had only been working in the bar for a few weeks, that they wanted to stop working in the bar and would if they just had the chance, and that she had only gone to dinner with the guy who paid her barfine earlier tonight.

I guess I believed these simple lies because it seemed that there was no reason for her to lie to me.  After all, I knew she was a hooker, she knew she was a hooker… why lie?

Payback

Thursday, 18 September 2008 · 1 Comment

Tuesday night I finished work around 7:30 p.m. and headed to the Sukhumvit area to visit a friend. Around ten o’clock I started for home, but since I was near Soi Cowboy I popped into Rawhide for a quick beer.

When it comes to sheer volumes of beautiful, naked female flesh, no bar in Bangkok beats Rawhide. There are a lot of new faces in the bar at the moment, and overall it’s a good crew. I polished off two bottles of Heineken and watched about 20 naked beauties do their thing on the stage. I left at the end of a high-energy four-girl show that was classic Rawhide.

I never get tired of this place.
