Slumdogging

freida-pinto

I heard from a friend that the movie Slumdog Millionaire was very good.  Then it won all those awards.  It seemed like other people agreed with my buddy.  So I downloaded it from Mininova.

Turns out that the movie is good.  I watched it yesterday just before I went to the Big Mango party.  Today I was bored and so I watched it again.

The best part of the movie may be Freida Pinto, the beautiful Indian model and actress in the photo above.

Fuck the Pound

So there’s a party at the Big Mango tonight.  They’re calling it the Fuck the Pound Party which sounds disconcertingly like it will involve sex with a number of canines.

The monthly parties at the Mango have been evolving a style of their own over time.  The initial ones were fairly staid affairs, followed by increasingly popular events that seemed to be testosterone-filled beer drinking festivals a little short on women and eye-candy.  The boys decided to import some female talent for last month’s get together, and it had unexpected and interesting results.

What do they have in store for us tonight?  Dancing German Shepards?

Well, the party starts at 8 p.m. and features 20-baht pints for a limited time, along with 100-baht bangers and mash.  I’ve had the bangers and mash before, and it’s very very good.  I’ve also been known to drink a pint or three, and they are very good as well.

Personally, I’ve got a workout at the gym with Young Penfold this afternoon.  The plan is to dash home for a shower (alone… not with Penfold) then off to the Mango for the party, so I expect to be banging, mashing and beering by mid-evening.

So, if you’re in Bangkok today, get your ass down to the Big Mango on Soi 4 at  8 p.m. for a bit of animal atmosphere.

I planned to write a blog today but I’m very hungover and can’t think past this freaking headache, so I thought I’d just give you another link to another amusing piece in Not the Nation.

The end of a long day

sleepy-799997

I started early today, drinking with several friends. I ended up going out to a club around 10 p.m. with a half dozen people even though I was way to tired. Couldn’t stay awake, and headed outside to grab a cab home at 11.

I snoozed in the cab, and woke up just in time to hop out in front of my building.

My (potential) Darwin Award entry

Saturday, 31 January 2009 · 11 Comments

I normally cut my own hair.  I have a set of electric clippers that I bought a decade ago in Australia, and every few days I pull them out and cut the fuzzy fringe that used to be my hair.

This morning I went into the toilet to get my shower. My toilet is a small, closet-sized affair where the water from the shower simply sprays onto the floor and exits via a floor-drain in the corner.

I turned on the water and started to reach for the soap, when it occured to me that I should probably trim my hair first.  So I turned off the water and went for the clippers.

Finance & Central Bank on different pages

shrinking

The Bangkok Post today is reporting that the Thai economy is shrinking:

The Thai economy contracted by as much as 3.5% in the fourth quarter, according to the Fiscal Policy Office.

The FPO, the economic policy agency of the Finance Ministry, urged the Bank of Thailand yesterday to “rethink” its foreign-exchange policies to help struggling exporters.

Dr Somchai suggested that the central bank consider a “competitive devaluation” for the baht to prop up exports.
But central bank governor Tarisa Watanagase said earlier this week that a weak baht policy could further undermine market confidence in the Thai economy, and that the baht was not uncompetitive relative to the country’s trading peers.
